Information

Our School

Broomfield is a co-educational primary school for pupils aged 4 to 11 years. The school was opened in 1968 to serve the new village of East Goscote. Rising numbers necessitated the building of further extensions in 1977. The school is of modern design, comprising twelve semi-open plan classrooms with additional facilities of quiet rooms, studio, kiln room, television room, library etc. The school is set in its own grounds with playing fields, playgrounds, nature area and the village library. In 1997 modifications were made to the infant building to incorporate a well resourced Foundation Stage unit. The building has had several alterations making it suitable for children with physical disabilities.

Recently the school has achieved Healthy Schools and Activemark 2008 status.

Admissions

Children are admitted into the school's Foundation Stage Unit at the age of four.  From 2010, four year old children will only be admitted into school in September of each year.  After an initial settling in period (approx two weeks of mornings only) the children will start full-time.

The school follows the admissions policy of the Leicestershire Education Authority, a copy of which is available from the school office. Any parents considering sending their child to Broomfield are encouraged to visit when the school is in session. A telephone call to arrange the appointment would be appreciated.

It is essential that parents register their children at the school office at least one year before their child is due to start school.

Children are invited to school for half hour story sessions towards the end of term prior to them being admitted to school. At the same time parents will be invited to a meeting with Mr. Nichol/Mrs Bramley to find out all the necessary information and to ask any questions.

Pupil Absence

From time to time a child may need to be absent from school through illness or another justified reason. In the event of such absences, parents are requested to inform the school either by letter or telephone.

Holidays in term time are not advisable but may be unavoidable. In such cases authorisation should be sought from the Headteacher.

Lunchtime Arrangements

Excellent school meals are available, cooked on the premises and served on a cafeteria system. Payment should be made on Monday for the full week. Cheques may be made payable to 'Leicestershire County Council'. If you wish to enquire about free school meals details are available from the school office. We treat such cases as confidential.

Alternatively, children can go home or bring a packed lunch in a named container. No fizzy drinks, glass bottles or cans are allowed.

Five dining supervisors and a teacher are on duty each lunch time to ensure the safety of the children.

Milk is available usually at playtime. This is free for children under 5. Thereafter it can be purchased a half-term in advance. The price of milk is subsidised by the EU.

Parents Evening & Assessment

When your child is admitted you will be asked to fill in a form to give us basic background information about your child. Please notify us if there are any changes in these details. Part of this background information is what we call 'Baseline Assessment', e.g. Can they recognise colours? Can they write their own name? This information is vital so we can plan the starting point for your child's school education.

As the children move through school their progress is monitored very carefully. Parent's Evenings take place each term.

The Spring Term meeting is where children's individual learning targets are identified and recorded. Progress on these targets is reported to parents in the Summer Term as part of each child's annual report.

Please remember that staff are only too willing to meet you at any other time if you have any concerns to discuss or positive comments to make.

A continuous approach to assessment is part of the requirements of the National Curriculum. Additionally, children at the end of Key stage One (Infants) and Key stage Two (Juniors), along with every other child of similar age in the country, will undertake National Assessments.
