Broomfield provides a safe, caring & stimulating environment where everyone is valued & given the opportunity to enjoy their own success.

Curriculum Subjects

English

Children approach all aspects of English in an exciting, active learning situation. There is a strong emphasis on children learning to read and deriving pleasure from sharing books and reading. We continually extend their reading ability by progressively introducing more demanding material at the right level, and encourage children to select books independently.

We expect children to take home books to share with their parents. Children will be encouraged to speak to a variety of audiences and take part in performances for children and parents. They are also encouraged to become good listeners by being given the opportunity to listen to a variety of spoken forms.

Writing begins as soon as children enter school. They are encouraged to produce their own independent writing as soon as possible, and are encouraged to write for a variety of purposes and audiences. As they progress through the school, increasingly more attention is given to handwriting and spelling.

Mathematics

We aim to enable children to enjoy the challenge of Mathematics. Children are helped to realise the relevance of each new concept. Every opportunity is given, therefore, to apply their mathematical learning to real-life situations.

National Curriculum Mathematics consists of four elements:
1. Using and applying maths
2. Number
3. Shape, space and measure
4. Handling data

Science

Children are taught to question, predict, hypothesise, observe, measure and interpret results.

The science curriculum consists of four areas:

1. Science Investigation
2. Life and Living Processes
3. Materials and their Uses
4. Physical Processes

Science is usually presented through a topic approach and children are expected to record their findings in a variety of ways.

ICT

Children are introduced to computers as soon as they enter school. Our computers are in constant use and by the time each child leaves the school they will be able to enter, change and extract information from a computer. We are most aware of the increasing importance of computer technology in all aspects of modern life. The Governors are well aware of the importance of updating equipment when funds allow.

History and Geography

Broomfield has devised a two year rolling programme of topics in order to develop children's understanding of the world around them, as it is today, and as it has been in the past.

We aim to provide all our children with a solid foundation of skills and knowledge. We have an excellent library of resource material which we are constantly updating and extending.

Physical Education

At Broomfield we aim to:
1. Promote a healthy lifestyle through physical activity
2. Develop positive attitudes towards individual and team achievements
3. Enable pupils to plan, perform and evaluate their performance
4. Understand and observe the need for rules to ensure safety and fair play
5. Acquire and improve the skills necessary for successful participation in sport

All children receive regular PE lessons each week. The lessons may cover gym, games, dance, athletics and outdoor games. The children will have the opportunity to swim regularly, the emphasis being on attempting to make sure all children can swim by the time they leave us.

Religious Education

As a requirement of the Education Reform Act 1988 RE has to be provided for all pupils. RE helps children to develop a sound understanding of religion and its impact on the way in which they conduct their life. The RE curriculum which is provided is in accordance with the Leicestershire Agreed Syllabus, a copy of which can be obtained from the school.

Parents have a right to withdraw their children from RE lessons if they so wish.

Art and Design Technology

Art plays a crucial part in the children's learning. Children learn to communicate their ideas and experience through a variety of media. Two main areas are covered:
1. Making and doing
2. Art appreciation

Technology is the practical application of skill and knowledge to solve problems. At Broomfield we offer children the opportunity to design and make using a wide range of materials and devices. Technology brings together the subjects of design, sewing, cooking, computer work and mathematics.

We encourage children to be critical of their work from an early age and to strive for better results. This takes the form of questions such as 'Does it work?' and 'How can it be made better?'

Personal, Social and Health Education

PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) is taught throughout the school and is delivered mainly through the SEAL (Social, Emotional Aspects of Learning) programme.

Two units of work are covered each term.  The units are: -

  • New Beginnings

  • Getting On and Falling Out
  • Going for Goals
  • Good to be Me
  • Relationships
  • Changes

Although the units are the same each year, the activities are different and encourage the children to acquire and build on social and personal skills and increase their self-confidence.

Health Education is taught mainly through the science curriculum, particularly in Key Stage 1.  The school also holds a Healthy Schools week in the Summer Term when many areas of Health Education are covered, including a Drugs Education Programme.
